Yesterday’s first annual Nissan Fest was easily one of the best local events I have been too in years! The vibe and format was very similar to a Formula Drift event. Hundreds of people were in attendance here at Evergreen Speedway to check out the event. NWMotiv set up the car show while on track, some of the best local drivers showed off their drift skills. This year there has been a rise in the number of drivers. The first open drift event held the the weekend before had over 40 drivers come out and Nissan Fest easily matched those numbers.
Local legend Rob Primo brought out is 2JZ powered S14 to slide the track and compete in the 5/8ths competition. Unfortunately all the cars that came out to compete, ended up breaking by the end of the day so the track officials let the 3/8ths open drift group back onto the track to keep the action going. Kyle Pollard, after leaving PSI in very late into the night buttoning up his new 2012 build ended his day short. Kyle’s transmission broke and was unable to fix it to stay in the competition.
Another up and comer is Matt Vankirk. Matt has been coming out to track days here at Evergreen Speedway, but this year he is really looking to step up and start getting serious about competing. I have had the pleasure of watching him drift the last two weekends here, and he is definitely taking his driving to the next level. His driving is becoming very consistent he is not afraid to challenge the walls here. As the day wound down and sun started to set, the crowd started filing out of the stadium and looking for food and warmth. You really couldn’t ask for a better day or a better way to kick out the car season in the Pacific Northwest.
