For the better part of twelve hours last Saturday (Western hemisphere time), our eyeballs and bandwidth were transfixed by the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour race. Competitors pushed hard and the record weekend crowd of 37,079 motorsports fans got more than their money’s worth. At the end of the day, it was Tekno Autoports’ #59 McLaren 650S that took top honours. We must mention the marvellous performance by Japan’s Katsumasa Chiyo in the NISMO Athlete Global Team Nissan GT3 GTR, who closed the gap with overall leader Shane van Gisbergen to a mere 1.276 seconds.
The Kiwi V8 Supercars driver kept his cool and powered through to give McLaren their first victory in this iconic race. The English supercar manufacturer showed they’d be the ones to beat after van Gisbergen set a new lap record 2:01.286 of for pole position. Here’s onboard video of The Giz’ feat. If you’re anything like us, you might want to close your eyes and take in that beautiful engine noise. Enjoy!
