Ferrari 458 Italias Chasing More History at Watkins Glen

Following Ferrari’s presence at The 24 Hours of Le Mans, endurance racing fans are hoping to see a return of the Italian giant to the LMP1 class. In the meantime, we can all enjoy their GT success in the Tudor United Sportscar Championship as the series returns to Watkins Glen International. Ferrari has enjoyed four previous sports car victories there with AIM Autosport currently leading in the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup standings. Also be on the lookout for Scuderia Corsa and Risi Competizione to improve their results at The Glen. The race airs in its entirety on Fox Sports 1 from 11:00am EST.

From Ferrari USA:

June 25, 2014 (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.) – In a track seeped with history for Ferrari, the teams and drivers racing Ferrari 458 Italias at this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen will be looking write new chapters of that history.

Ferrari’s legacy of winning at Watkins Glen International, located in Watkins Glen, New York, includes victory in the 1972 Six Hours for drivers Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx in the Ferrari 312 PB. The famous MOMO Ferrari 333 SP of Gianpiero Moretti won at Watkins Glen three times – in 1994 partnered with Eliseo Salazar, in 1996 partnered with Max Papis, and in 1998 partnered with Didier Theys and Mauro Baldi.

The Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen also marks not only the sixth round of the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, but the third round of the Patron North American Endurance Championship. On the strength of their victory at the Rolex 24 and runner-up finish at the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell lead the NAEC’s GT-Daytona class in the no. 555 AIM Autosport Ferrari 458 Italia.

After scoring their first victory of the season at the previous GT-D round at The Raceway at Belle Isle, drivers Alessandro Balzan, Jeff Westphal, and the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia will be looking to repeat that success at Watkins Glen.

The GT-LeMans class no. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia will see Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer share the driving duties. Fisichella is fresh from victory in a Ferrari 458 Italia in the GT-LeMans class at the 24 Hours of LeMans, and he and Kaffer scored the best result of the year for Risi Competizione in the previous TUDOR Championship GT-LeMans round at Laguna Seca. A hard-fought race saw them take third in their Ferrari.

Rejoining the TUDOR Championship this weekend in GT-LeMans will be the no. 57 Krohn Racing Ferrari 458 Italia, driven by Tracy Krohn and Nic Jonsson.

The Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will be broadcast at 11:00 AM ET on FOX Sports 1 on Sunday, June 29.
