Classic Movie Scene: The Blues Brothers (1980)

They’re on a mission from God and nothing will stop them from helping the orphans! The Blues Brothers began as a sketch on Saturday Night Live but soon took on a life of its own. The band which was fronted by ‘Joliet’ Jake and Elwood Blues (the late John Belushi and Dan Akroyd respectively) released albums, performed live and of course, starred in two films directed by John Landis. There were numerous cameos by legendary recording artists like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway and many more. Besides the great music, this movie is also famous for its car chases where police relentlessly (and ridiculously) purse the Bluesmobile with Elwood in the driver’s seat. That car was not one but twelve 1974 Dodge Monacos which were part of a fleet bought used from the California Highway patrol. They set a world record of 103 crashed cars masterminded by Stunt Coordinator Gary McLarty, which stood for two years. In this scene, the Bluesmobile and the coppers chasing them are clocking 118 miles per hour under the elevated train line with stunt performers as innocent bystanders. Enjoy the mayhem!
