1. Audi A3

The Audi A3 is our favorite hatchback. The new model builds on the older generation with a sharpened design and far superior interior quality. So good is the interior, in fact, that it puts many executive saloons to shame. We recommend the A3 to business leasers first and foremost, or individuals who are likely to be travelling on the motorway – this is because of the cars excellent range of economical diesel engines and the level of comfort and refinement the A3 offers. Our favourite version of the new A3 is the 1.6 TDI in Sport trim; this isn’t the fastest A3 you can buy, nor the top specification S Line, but it offers the best value for money and the suspension is better optimised for rough and uneven UK roads than the S Line’s too.

2. Fiat Punto Evo

The Fiat Punto Evo is a great lease car because it offers a solid range of engines, a sporty drive and good practicability, thus ensuring that you don’t get bored within just a few months of it after driving away. Leasers will enjoy the cars subtle ride quality around town and the awesome grip levels the chassis provides as the speed builds up. There are several engines to choose from, our favourite being the 1.3-litre diesel Multijet, which offers spritely performance and also good fuel consumption, at 64.2 mpg on a combined cycle. The new Astra GTC is gorgeous; it looks like an Astra but it isn’t – it shares none of the same body parts with Vauxhalls best-selling hatchback and it is a car in its own right. The GTC offers leasers a great combination of refinement, style and practicability, with a wide range of engines to choose from. our favourite is the 1.7-litre CDTi 16V. This diesel unit will return 65.7 mpg on a combined cycle. The wide wheel base of the GTC allows the car to also be terrific fun in the corners; by no means is this car boring, a term often fired at the Astra by the motoring press.

We say go for SRI or Sport trim – these look the part with large alloy wheels and creature comforts such as climate control, heated mirrors and Bluetooth.
