Out of Nothing – Character Driven (Part 2 of 2)

After meeting the Creative Team for the upcoming movie, Out of Nothing, I thought our day was coming to end and Andy and I prepared for the journey home. Although I wanted to see the bikes and meet any of the racers, I knew that they must be preparing for Bonneville and we would meet them on another day.  But as luck would have it, Andy and I were invited to stop by the shop to see the Super Rat‘s shop first hand and meet Bjorklund Brothers, Carl and Mark, two of the Bonneville racers featured in Out of Nothing.  We are excited for the day when we get to spend time with the two other racers, Jason Omer and Bill Woods.  Luckily, we did get a chance meet and greet with Jason, at a local flat track race last Saturday night. After the incredible day spent with the Out of Nothing creative team (if you didn’t see part 1 of my Out of Nothing series – click here) I  didn’t know if our day could get much better…but it did.  We drove into the Super Rat complex to be greeted by a full cast of characters….all equally as passionate about their bikes.  They live, breathe, eat, sleep…motorcycles.  Their passion was infectious.

Mark Bjorklund was the first to greet us with a big hello and “let me show you around” and we were in any guys fantasy of bikes and a garage full of just “stuff”….albeit really cool “stuff” which was everywhere.  It was a masterful clutter that felt somehow welcoming and you couldn’t help but to just take it all in.

Mark’s brother, Carl, is slightly more reserved, but equally as friendly and he wanted us to see the details of his shop too.  He is also a master at working with sheet metal and I noticed a metal top hat that he had carefully hand crafted…it was so cool!

What was really inspiring to me was to just listen to their stories.  To know that just being able to race once at the Bonneville Salt Flats was a dream come true.  They talked about how as kids, they would go to the library just to look at pictures of Bonneville race cars.  Bonneville was not just a racing venue, it was a piece of who they are and what inspires them.  And only two years ago, did they venture to the Salt for their first trip.  Luckily, for everyone friend and photographer, Chad DeRosa, also went along. He just started shooting with no agenda, no plan and certainly not even a thought of a movie; but as he looked at the back of his camera’s viewfinder, he knew he captured something special.  I think many of our My Life at Speed friends can relate…whether that be Baja, Pikes Peak, Bonneville or some other venue, many of us have a “bucket list” of at least going to that place just once.  We could relate to their passion as they talked about the Salt.

I think for me, the visuals tell a better story than I ever could.  Thank you to all of the guys at Super Rat that day for 100% completing a perfect day.
