Five Minutes with Formula Drift Driver Matt Field

Matt Field.  I started rooting for him a few years ago when I learned he was a Bay Area guy (my home area) and I keep rooting for him because not only is he a genuinely good person, he’s got a ridiculous amount of talent, as well.  After a long, grueling year that was the Formula Drift Championship, Matt found himself with a solid seventh place finish for the year. Not too bad considering his relatively young age of just 23.  But not surprising considering his extensive racing background which includes not only drifting, but Motorcycle and ATV racing.  He even takes a turn in the family off road truck, where Matt co-drives for his father.  The duo have taken home over thirty wins and four championships.

Matt also makes a point of staying involved with the grass roots scene here in the San Francisco Bay Area.  He is a judge in at least one local drift series, and you can often find him abusing the tires on his Formula Drift Nissan 240SX at any number of events that are held locally throughout the year.

Matt also stays busy with his new business venture, Drift Cave, which you’ll hear him talk abut in the interview.

Here are the highlights from my conversation with Matt Field.

I've been around some form of racing since I was a kid. First hanging around Ascot in Southern California. Then, after moving to Texas as a teen, I got hooked on drag racing and did that for almost fifteen years. In between I have raced Dirt bikes and Quads. 2011 Marked my 8th and final year racing up Pikes Peak: Five in the Pro Quad division and three in Time Attack. Future racing plans are in the works, but until then I'm at the track shooting for My Life at Speed as much as I possibly can.
