Classic Movie Scene: Mad Max (1979)

The name doesn’t necessarily Max Rockatansky may not ring any bells but Mad Max certainly does. Director George Miller’s tale of carnage on the Australian highways in a bleak future was made on a shoestring budget but became an international hit spawning two sequels and the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy. In the first film, depraved criminals led by a chief wacko named Toecutter, terrorize the citizenry, seemingly unchecked by the beleaguered Main Force Patrol (MFP). However one officer struck fear into the maniacs’ hearts – Max. When the story began, Max drove a 1974 Ford Falcon XB sedan, which was an actual decommissioned Melbourne Police car. Unfortunately as these stories go, tragedy struck and Max eventually took the wheel of a 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe called the Pursuit Special. In this scene (original Australian film dub – thank you very much), Max’s best friend Jim Goose and Barry the Mechanic introduce him to the last of the V8s. It’s also fun to see Max get hypnotized by the engine sounds. Later in the film, we get to see the Pursuit Special in all its dreaded glory, when Max went on merciless rage-fuelled vendetta against the gang but for now, here’s the simple moment when an ordinary guy fell in love with an extraordinary car.
